Some entrepreneurs are doing everything right to attract their ideal clients. But, for some reason, they aren’t closing the sale with as many potential clients as they would like. Even though they create excitement and prospects seem jazzed about working with them, they don’t get enough people to sign up. You may know exactly what I’m talking about if this is happening in your small business.
If you are hearing, “I can’t afford it” from your potential clients, try these two tactics to get more clients.
1. Address the idea of investment in your “Interview with…” Be sure you have a section in your “Interview with [your name here]” about investing in yourself. Investing in yourself is a mindset. Ask potential clients to read the interview before your “get acquainted” call so they discover answers to many of their potential objections, including affordability.
2. Talk about how you’ve invested in yourself. When speaking to a prospective student, I’ll say, “You know, in my own life, the only thing that’s gotten me where I am today is that I’ve been willing to invest in myself. Without that, I wouldn’t even be close to this level of success.” I share how I belong to two mastermind groups, have three mentors and continue to get coaching. I tell people how these investments pay for themselves in the form of increased revenue.
The truth is a lot of people say they can’t afford something, but then they buy a flat screen TV and can somehow afford that. So, it helps for potential clients to read about this piece on mindset and investing in your “Interview With…” ahead of time. Of course, they need to see the value of working with you and be clear on what they can achieve as a result.
All of these ideas will help you get clients as they better understand why investing in themselves is necessary to achieve the results they want.

Have your written your “Interview with…” yet? This is an important page on your website which addresses frequently asked questions (FAQs) and also responds to common sales objections BEFORE you speak to your prospects. If you haven’t prepared this document and posted it on your site, make time this week to get it done.

Wooohoooo! It’s official. We’re moving to our new dream home in a couple of weeks. Since last year, I’ve been quietly manifesting the purchase of a very specific and absolutely gorgeous home, and I’m happy to say we manifested it, included the quick selling of our current home. I’m thrilled, and happy-nervous, as it’s a big upgrade. For me, it’s a humbling reminder that, with the right focus, belief, faith, action and positive expectation, you can create ANYTHING you want in your life. Anything. (That’s what I demonstrated so powerfully for the Mindset Retreat attendees last week in Miami.)
Speaking of creating what you want in your life, it’s time we get serious about growing your business. If you want to work with me directly to grow your business and get YOUR message out there in the world in a much bigger way, and multiply your income, now’s the time. (Seriously, if not now, when? There’s no time to waste.) So, just a quick mention that I’m currently accepting applications for my Mastermind groups and Private Coaching programs. You can still apply by going to the Client Attraction Winners Academy info page to watch videos, read about the different programs and download the application. Send it in to me and I’ll personally read it to help you determine which mentoring program will create the best results for you.
(By the way, I spoke to another client this morning who started working with me a year and half ago, who was making $150,000 back then, frustrated and unhappy, and who just crossed the million-dollar-mark in her business with my help. If you’re interested in similar results, fill out the application and let’s talk this week.)
What an absolutely wonderful weekend we had! Friday was my 40th birthday, and we had all kinds of festivities planned for the weekend. I flew in my dad from Paris, hired a fabulous event planner to create something truly magical for me and my 35 close friends and family that came into Connecticut from around the country and abroad. I also hired a professional photographer to capture each and every moment of the celebration (including the surprise finale at my home that no one expected) and I’ll post some pictures on Facebook and Twitter this coming week, so you can feel like you were with us too. 😉
But mostly, I was really excited to be turning 40, so much so that I couldn’t sleep Thursday night. I know that it doesn’t seem like a milestone MOST people use the word “excited” about, but I have my own personal philosophy about life. Whereby some others are afraid of growing “older”, I feel that perhaps it’s because they haven’t necessarily CONSCIOUSLY created the life they wanted yet. One of the things I’ve been very deliberate about is crafting a life that I love, right down to what I do for a living, the kinds of clients I have, my income, my family, where I live, where I work, and what I do in my personal time. I’ve made up my mind that I don’t wake up in the morning to be mediocre, and that I want to live life like I mean it. And so everything I’ve set my mind to so far, I’ve taken a no-excuses approach to achieve, and the best is yet to come.
Have you ever become a victim of your own perfection paralysis when it comes to marketing yourself? I talked to a few clients this week who have been toying with the idea of putting together a talk to promote their services for months but haven’t done anything about it. The problem is they’re waiting to have the talk written, finished, practiced, the flyer completed and have a list of marketing sources that are lined up to promote the thing before actually selecting a date and getting it done. NONSENSE!
If I’d waited to have all things perfectly settled before moving forward with a talk, I’d still have only 3 or 4 clients in my practice, and believe me, I wouldn’t be moving forward very quickly. Instead, I believe in scrapping this traditional route and going backwards. Ask any clients of mine and they’ll tell you I’m notorious for getting my clients to commit to a date 4 weeks from today (yes, we actually have them pull out their calendar and select the date right then and there) and book the space, time, and title of the talk, before anything else is done.
What are my clients’ reactions? Yup, you guessed it… “YIKES! I need to get my butt in gear and get things going! I’m giving a talk in 4 weeks!!!”
Magically, everything always gets done. The talk is written, finished, practiced, the flyer is completed and they have a list of marketing sources lined up to promote the thing, and always before the deadline. I call this being PULLED forward by your marketing, instead of being a victim of Perfection Paralysis.
When you set yourself up to stop procrastinating and to start working to make it happen, it works every time. In the past, I too have dragged my feet on picking a date for an event I wanted to give. ‘Should I have it in the summer, should I wait ‘til fall?’ Since nothing was happening, I pulled out my calendar, picked a date, gave my credit card number to reserve the space and then made it happen, and you can too! There’s nothing like setting a deadline and getting in gear to make it happen.
Your Client Attraction Assignment:
Your turn. Are you procrastinating putting together a seminar or big event to market your services and reach out to your prospective clients? End the questioning NOW and just pick a date. Commit and then everything will fall into place because you’ll HAVE to get it done. Now, that’s what I call being pulled by your future. Use your business coach or a buddy as an accountability benchmark, and then send them an email with the date of your newly scheduled seminar or workshop. The most accountable thing you can do though is to pay for the space ahead of time. That’ll get you moving! 🙂

In sifting through emails from a R&D survey I launched a couple of years ago, I read the responses, and honestly, I wanted to cry. Don’t get me wrong. It’s not that I haven’t been aware that most solopreneurs have very low expectations of what could be made in self-employment (I’ve been at this for almost 10 years after all!), but I just didn’t know how LOW. Until I got the responses to the following question: “What is the most amount of mo-ney you see yourself making as a self-employed person?” Not just this year, but EVER.
Close to 200 solopreneurs (mostly female) wrote in and shared with me their “Most-I’ll-ever-make-in-a-year” numbers. What shocked me was that the number itself was really LOW and the majority of people wrote in numbers within a short range: between $50,000 and $75,000. Sure, a couple of them wrote in $150,000, but even THAT seemed like a far cry from what I *know* is possible, when you shift the way you work, get good marketing in place, create systems for everything, outsource, and set up leveraged and passive streams of in-come.
“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” – Carl Jung
You’ve heard a lot more about the Law of Attraction recently. For nearly 10 years, I’ve been using it consciously to create my ideal business, on a daily basis, in addition to disciplined marketing strategies.
With anything in life, if you don’t KNOW where you’re going, you’ll either eventually get lost or it’ll take you a long time to get there, much longer than necessary. If you’re heading out to drive cross-country and choose to do it without a roadmap, it may not even make sense to head out in the first place. Worse, if you don’t consciously choose what you want, you will continue to attract by default what your unconscious mind wants to attract.
While the media is searching out anything to create panic in the eyes of consumers, I want you to think about your own life. When you went to the mall last time, was it empty? What about popular restaurants? Could you hear crickets chirping? Personally, everywhere I go, I’m still waiting in line, I still wait ten minutes for a table, and I’m seeing people STILL buying a lot. In fact, to put it in perspective, our business has made more just last month than most people make all year. What “economy”?
It’s a phenomenon that happens to most people in business for themselves after a few years. When solo-entrepreneurs first get started in marketing their business, they have gusto, they have energy, and many take a no-excuses approach to getting clients. They’re WILLING to do what it takes, and they do it often (most of them).
But after a few years, they begin to rest on their laurels, they get lazy, and after a while, they stop doing what they used to do to get clients. Some stop networking; some stop doing free intro classes, either in person or over the phone; some no longer do as much speaking as they used to. They’ve slowed down their marketing, and then they wonder what’s happened to their pipeline: it’s empty. (more…)
Have you ever looked at your to-do list and just wanted to run away? Sometimes, procrastination gets the best of us self-employed people. It seems that everything is a priority and we tend to put some things on the back burner. The thing is, if the items on your to-do list have to do with marketing and Client Attraction, then you don’t want to ignore them (if you do, your pipeline of prospects will be empty in 6 months, or less).
Procrastination creeps its ugly head in my business every now and then. Personally, I think it’s more overwhelm than procrastination and the list can be so overwhelming that I tend to go into avoidance/denial mode, preferring to just not deal with it. (Has that ever happened to you too?) (more…)
