Sometimes, it’s best to not reinvent the wheel or “fix what ain’t broke,” as the saying goes. Let’s say you have several clients you absolutely LOVE. Look at where all of these clients have come from. Perhaps it’s a particular networking group, or a talk that you gave, a referral from a strategic alliance or Center Of Influence, or a referral from a client. It’s important to see where your clients have come from, so that you can do more of the same.

Avoid focusing too much on what hasn’t helped you attract many clients in your Marketing Pie, but rather, what HAS worked. That’s what you want to focus on.

One way to keep track is to set up a system for this. Each time a new private coaching client signs up to work with me, they fill out a section of my Welcome Packet that says “Whom may I thank for your referral?” This is a great way to keep track, because you’ll forget, but they won’t.

I have a section in my database that I’ve labeled “Referred by” next to the client’s name and in that section, I note who referred that person, where I originally met them, or what talk they came to hear. At the end of the quarter or the year, it helps me to eliminate the marketing efforts or networking groups that aren’t working and focus on the ones that are.

This also has the added bonus of tracking which referral sources have given me the most leads and reminds me to thank them appropriately for each and every referral.

Your Client Attraction Assignment:

  • Start tracking where your clients come from so that you can continue marketing there.
  • Ask each and every client whom they were referred by or where you met.
  • Create a worksheet to keep track of this.
  • Review this often to see what’s working and what’s not.
  • Focus on (and do more of) what works and eliminate the efforts. that don’t produce results.

Let’s agree that there are different types of referrals from networking. The referrals that have a little business for us and those who have a LOT of business for us—also known as the Cash Cows.

Client example: A real estate broker client of mine has redirected her entire networking efforts to rub elbows with those who have a LOT of business for her, rather than just a little business for her.

During our coaching, we realized that she could either network with INDIVIDUALS (who sell one apartment at a time) or DEVELOPERS (who need to sell 15 units at one time). When the light bulb went on and after screaming EUREKA!, we looked for associations that she could join to create lasting relationships with real estate developers (Professional Women In Construction is one of them). She will now be networking there regularly and maximizing her networking to reach Cash Cows (i.e., getting a referral to sell 15 units rather than just 1). Next, she’ll be targeting architects. If she keeps this up, she is on her way to become an apartment selling machine!

Your Client Attraction Assignment:

Instead of going after ONE client at a time in networking, think about those people who have a LOT of business for you, instead of just a little business for you. Make a list of these.

Then visit the web to see if they have an association you could belong to. If they’re local, join the association. If they’re not, offer to write a monthly column for their association newsletter or speak at the annual conference.

While the media is searching out anything to create panic in the eyes of consumers, I want you to think about your own life. When you went to the mall last time, was it empty? What about popular restaurants? Could you hear crickets chirping? Personally, everywhere I go, I’m still waiting in line, I still wait ten minutes for a table, and I’m seeing people STILL buying a lot. In fact, to put it in perspective, our business has made more just last month than most people make all year. What “economy”?
