I often stand on my soapbox and tell you how massively important it is to put a majority of your focus on marketing if you want to be successful. But don’t get me wrong. You ALSO have to focus on your finances, if you want to become wealthy. In fact, it’s massively important that you set aside money, for taxes, and for your retirement. Thing is, you also want to take your family away on a vacation or buy yourself some beautiful things. (What’s the point otherwise?) ‘Dealing with money’ can be overwhelming, especially when you don’t understand what your options are, and what the consequences of your financial decisions could be. I just love Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero’s List of the 50 Coolest Marketers of 2010 and I’m also honored to be among them!
Lorrie included me for “teaching the softer way of getting clients.” For me, that’s what it’s all about. How do you market using a “softer approach?” You pull your clients toward you rather than chase them down.
Pulling clients in is not only more fun than pushing hard to “get” clients, it’s MUCH easier. Who wouldn’t rather have clients call them instead of pounding the pavement? The concept is a no-brainer to grasp, but very few solo-entrepreneurs actually do anything about becoming more client attractive.

Our son Luc’s birthday happens to land in late July, when virtually all his friends are away on summer vacation – that happened to me too when I was young. So, we decided to invite all his friends for a big birthday party a month later at his favorite playground by the beach, including his classmates from last year’s class AND this year’s new classmates AND their siblings and parents. We decorated the big gazebo and picnic tables, had a ton of pizzas delivered, put out a gazillion juice boxes, set up my iPhone on the portable speakers to play a kids’ station on Pandora, and while the kids played on the swing set and playground under our watchful eyes, we adults chatted, laughed and sipped mimosas. Not a bad Saturday afternoon! (I love this picture. I’m a sucker for that smile of his, and he knows it.)
(I owe a big thanks to my personal assistant Kara for doing all the coordinating, all the shopping – especially for getting that scrumptious cake – and for being patient enough to put together 35 goodie bags. I wouldn’t have been able to do it otherwise! Oh, and to my husband Derek too, who cheerfully went back to get the cake I forgot in the fridge at home!)
Last weekend was possibly one of the best weekends of my life! Friday night started with a bang having our traditional Friday Night Pizza At The Beach with our friends and their children (the kids play on the large swing set or by the ocean, while we watch on, talking, sipping wine and chilling out watching the sun go down.) Saturday was a glorious day at the beach with the kids, before our good friends arrived from New York for the annual Clam Bake at the club. Imagine the dock filled with blue and white checkered tables, a Key West band going, having a rum punch by the water, followed by 3 pound lobsters, steamers, shrimp, New England clam chowder, and late evening fireworks over the water. It was heaven!
The next day, we had our annual 4th of July parade and potluck brunch at the beach, before heading out for a day at the pool with the children and our guests. We hosted a group of friends for an alfresco dinner at home, and repeated it all the next day. I was seriously blissed out the entire weekend! All I kept thinking to myself was, “Is it really possible for one person to take in so much abundance and love at the same time?” I guess the answer was, Yes. I am so grateful for my life, to get to serve from my heart in a big way and I am grateful for you too. I hope you had a great weekend too!
Well, my stomach muscles were SORE, still, as I wrote this Friday! Our very first Winners Academy Gold Mastermind Retreat was an over-the-top, AMAZING success! 60 of our Gold members flew in from all around the world to work with us privately this past week for two info-packed and fun-filled days of learning and business-growth, laughing, dancing and supporting each other to multiplying their businesses quickly this year. We showed them how to literally find money–where they thought there was none–in their business, one even signed on a new client within minutes of implementing the suggestions I gave her, with 9 more to go. It was magical.
I surprised them all by inviting Yulia, the famous belly dancer, to join us and teach us how the secrets to mastering belly dancing apply directly to building your business. She danced exotically, while balancing a sword on her head and hips, then taught us all how to do it. Hysterical! The Gold retreat was the perfect balance of learning, laser coaching, Q&A, marketing hot-seats, business building exercises, worksheets and masterminding, along with dancing, laughing, fun, even a session of “the Electric Slide” and a cocktail party. (Derek begged me NOT to show you the picture of him attempting to belly dance on stage with Yulia, with a shimmery sarong around his neck. I agreed, but it was definitely a sight to see. You should have been there!)
OK, so you’ve figured out where your best clients have come from and where your Ideal Clients can be found in large numbers, and inexpensively. It’s time to create a marketing plan that has you focusing on “fishing where the fish are.” The more focus you have, the better the results.
When coaching clients to do this in private sessions, I ask them to draw a large circle on a blank sheet of paper, and draw 4 lines to create a pie with 8 slices.
Then I ask them to fill out each slice of the pie with what they’re currently doing to attract clients (only the things that really work) and then fill in the rest of the marketing pie with marketing tools we’ve agreed will PULL their clients in. This comes from the list of where their Ideal Clients congregate, remember?
