Today’s topic may sound a little kooky at first, but it’s about business karma. Yes, karma. Karma, client attraction, making more money, how does that all relate? Well, let me tell you a story. I did an event recently and I brought somebody up on stage for a business makeover. Together, we came up with an idea for her business and for her life purpose, along with the perfect web address for her site.

Somebody in the room confirmed this website address was available so I suggested that as soon as she got off the stage, she buy it. However, shortly after that somebody else sitting in that same room had already registered it. (We can tell because when you do a search for who registered it, it was somebody who was at the event.)

To put it bluntly, it makes me sick to my stomach. One, because at every event that I have we all agree that this is a sacred space. And also, those who I attract to my events typically are people with integrity. But here’s the thing. Integrity is doing the right thing when no one’s watching. In fact, integrity in business is doing the right things especiallywhen no one’s watching.

So, think for a second about this person who went and registered the website address even though it wasn’t hers to have. How do you think that she’s starting up her business energetically? This is what I mean by business karma.

The minute that you begin a business having done something that’s out of integrity, what do you think is going to happen karmically? There’s a saying that I really like and I think that you should live by as well, “Life gives to the giver and takes from the taker.”

What energy are you putting in your business? I remember many years ago one of the things that I regret and I actually talk about this in the brand new book that I am about to release called Embrace Your Magnificence: How to Get Out of Your Own Way to Live a Richer, Fuller, More Abundant Life.

In there I talk about business karma and my own experience with it. I was annoyed with a client who was not doing the work and who was giving my team a really big hassle. She wanted to pull out of the program and I didn’t let her get all her money back. In hindsight, I should have but keep in mind this was a long, long time ago―about 10 years. I’m not totally proud of how I handled the situation. Because I live my business through integrity, I should have just given her money back, blessed her and let her go.

Your Client Attraction Assignment

For your assignment, I want you to consider a tough question. How might you be slightly out of integrity in your business and with your clients now―or perhaps with your JV partners and other strategic alliances? How are you out of integrity in your business policies and procedures? How might you start doing the right thing―especially when no one is watching?

When you start doing the right thing, you begin to attract more good opportunities and more yummy clients. People can feel it on an energetic level when you are in integrity, when you give. Remember life gives to the giver and takes from the taker.

How are you taking and how can you do more giving, energetically, to do the right thing? Karma always comes back to bite you. It’s like a boomerang. Whatever you put out there eventually comes back. Do the right thing. Live in integrity. It’s time to figure it out.

Remember, If you’re doing something that’s not exactly right, you can immediately change it to do the right thing.

One of the ways to play a much bigger game in marketing your business and really create leverage in your business is through speaking. Why? Because instead of talking one-to-one, you’re now talking one-to-many. Instead of marketing one-to-one, you’re now marketing one-to-many. That is the ultimate leverage.

There are two ways to speak. You can hold your own  and conferences or you can be a speaker for a group that has already done all the work to assemble your ideal clients for you. You just come in and speak. Either way there is one thing that you need either to fill your room or to get booked to speak and that is a compelling signature talk title. When you have a compelling signature talk title, it is the one thing that will fill your room.

A lot of people spend a lot of time with their content but their signature talk title is an afterthought. I want you to think about reversing that. Obviously you want to give good content in your actual talk but before a prospective attendee decides whether to come to the talk or not, they really need to be compelled by your talk title.

So I would recommend that you spend quite a bit of time creating a signature talk title that will have somebody say, “Wow! That’s exactly what I need. I’m going to cancel my Tuesday evening dinner plans with my friends to come and see this person speak.” It should be so compelling that even you would want to go even though you’re already an expert at what you do.

In the same vein when you’re booked to speak by a promoter or an event planner, the signature talk title is the thing that they will decide whether or not they will hire you to come and speak.

So how do you create a compelling signature talk title that will make somebody hire you or come to hear you speak? Well, I believe that your talk title should provide the answer to your ideal clients’ biggest struggle. So if your ideal clients’ biggest struggle is to attract clients then you want to put that in your signature talk title.

For example, for many years my signature talk title has been, How to Attract All the Clients You Need. It’s even the title of my free CD, I’ve done teleclasses on this. I get booked to speak all over the world with this talk title because all of my ideal clients are looking for more clients, whether they are just starting out or they want to really leverage and fill their programs.

So the way I want you to think about this is what would your ideal client do anything and pay anything to have—perhaps to increase or decrease, to acquire, or to let go of? What would they do anything and pay anything for? What are their biggest struggles, the biggest challenges that they have? Once you’ve written it down, turn it into a signature talk title by saying, “How to.” For example, if your best client has trouble growing their hair, then, “How to stop the balding and grow more hair” could be your signature talk title. Then if you want to make it even more interesting, add “in 30 days or less,” or “in half the time.” The idea is that the minute your ideal client sees the title, they will say, “Wow! I have got to attend!”

Your video assignment

Your assignment for the week is creating your compelling signature talk title. Give it a lot of thought and work it out. Then post it in the comments below on my blog. I want to read what is it that you’re going to use to fill your rooms or to get booked to speak. Good luck!

The mistake that most self-employed people in private practice looking for clients make is that they tell people about what they think they do, instead of the results the client wants to receive. The problem is, people don’t necessarily want a journey; they want a direct route to a solution. Essentially, they want RESULTS, first and foremost.

You see, everyone (including you and me) walks around thinking, “What’s In It For ME?” So, when you describe what you do in terms of a boring process or describe what you do using a label (“I’m an acupuncturist” or “I do financial plans”) you immediately tune out the other person because you’re talking about yourself, not them. And that’s not very Client Attractive.

The key is, it’s got to be about THEM, and that’s what draws people to you. The more you can talk about them, their problems and what solutions are out there for them, the more you’ll start really getting attention from prospects. Better yet, the more clients you’ll sign on.

To take this “focusing on what they really get from you” to a higher level, let’s refer to a list of the top 10 reasons, motivators, results or benefits that make people buy, according to Jim Edwards and David Garfinkel in their ebook entitled “Ebook Secrets Exposed” www.EbookSecretsExposed.com:

Here, according to them, are the most powerful motivators:

1. Make money

2. Save money

3. Save time

4. Avoid effort

5. Get more comfort

6. Achieve greater cleanliness

7. Attain fuller health

8. Escape physical pain

9. Gain praise

10. Be popular

Now, not every one of these fits your business, and most likely, yours fall into the top 4 motivators, unless you’re in healthcare or image, then it usually falls within the last 6. Either way, it’s time for you to narrow them down into motivators from the Top Ten list above.

Your Client Attraction Assignment:

Circle the motivators from the list above that fit your business and then list an example of how this has already happened using real client examples.

Which of these does your service provide? Write down the “Motivators” that fit your business.

Now provide concrete client examples that apply to past clients, for each. (“I helped Client A make money when…,” “I helped Client B save money when…”)
